Achilles Tendonitis is No Picnic

Achilles tendonitis can be a major problem for many types of people. The Achilles tendon joins the calf muscles to the heel bone. This, as you can imagine, is of great significance when jumping, walking or standing on the ball of the foot. Achilles tendonitis creates severe pain since the tendon is located behind the heel. Often, Achilles tendonitis occurs from high-intensity activities that leave the tendon inflamed. Tendonitis sets in slowly and many may not realize how far it has progressed until it’s too late. When proper treatment is not obtained quickly, the tendon can rupture from chronic swelling. A major factor leading to the formation of Achilles tendonitis includes failing to stretch before participating in an exercise, which can damage the calf muscles. Other factors include wearing poorly-fitting footwear such as high heels or having bone spurs on the back of the heel. The type of pain accompanying Achilles tendonitis includes pain in the calf, heel inflammation, and toe pain when bearing weight on the foot. It’s best to avoid high impact activities when experiencing this pain to prevent further damage to your foot’s tendon.
