Athlete’s foot is a condition caused by a fungus that attacks the foot and can thereafter spread to other parts of the body due to its highly contagious nature. Fungus universally thrives in warm, dark, and moist environments. Shoes have all three of these elements, depending on their level of use. This makes them breeding grounds for fungus, which is also commonly found in shared public areas such as pools or locker rooms and is spread by walking barefoot. Symptoms of this condition include itchy and burning sensation and pain. It is important to take precautions to prevent sharing baths and disinfecting tubs after each use so that the fungus doesn’t spread throughout the family.
