Back to School Foot Health Tips

The summer’s nearly over, and throughout Cook County, families are preparing for their kids to head back to school. You’re probably purchasing pencils and notebooks and shopping for the perfect first day of school outfit. Is yours one of them? But are you giving any thought to your kids’ feet and what it’s going to take to keep them healthy for school, sports, and play in the coming year? Here are some tips from Dr. Stavros O. Alexopoulos:

  1. Hasit been a while since a professional measured your kid’s feet? Instead of guessing the proper size and ordering online, head to your local shoe retailer and ask a staff member to measure your kid’s feet using a Brannock device. It will ensure a proper fit. Purchase shoes in the correct size and resist the temptations to accept hand-me-downs or shop for secondhand shoes as cushioning and support are worn and ineffective.
  2. Be sure everyone’s feet are washed daily with warm water and antibacterial soap, even if there won’t be a bath before bedtime. Dry well, especially between the toes, to prevent athlete’s foot and other fungal infections.
  3. If your children tell you they are experiencing discomfort, take their complaints seriously. Kids are vulnerable to a host of issues, including stress fractures and tendinitis. With years of education and experience, your podiatrist is a medical specialist who can examine, diagnose, and treat any foot-related illness or injury. Non-invasive options are often available, such as custom orthotics, shoe inserts that will correct posture or gait while providing additional comfort and enhanced support.
