Bunions are one of the most common foot deformities we see at our podiatry practice at Stavros O. Alexopoulos, DPM in Chicago. They affect women in larger numbers and tend to worsen over time. What are bunions?

Bunions develop when the toes are subject to excessive, repetitive pressure. Eventually, this pressure causes the big toe to shift out of place towards your other toes and causes the big toe joint to enlarge. In many cases, bunions are inherited or form from wearing incorrect footwear. Wearing narrow, tight shoes like high heels are the culprit of many bunions that form in women. Eventually, as the joint grows larger, problems with mobility and comfort can result.

The first step to treating bunions is to recognize you have it and to make an appointment with a foot care specialist. The podiatrist may recommend the following to minimize any pain, redness, swelling, and discomfort that often results from the condition:
