Don’t Allow Ingrown Toenails to Grow Out of Control

Ingrown toenails are a nasty problem to the health of your foot and ankles because they can impede the way you walk from the pain they cause.  Avoiding ingrown toenails is very important. Stavros O. Alexopoulos, DPM can help ensure you get the best treatment for this condition. You can visit Dr. Alexopoulos at My Chicago Foot Expert located in Chicago, Illinois.

You may think it couldn’t happen to you, but ingrown toenails are more common than you realize. They can happen when you wear shoes that are too small around the toes, from a fungal infection or even by dropping something heavy on your feet. Commonly, poor eyesight or having a hard time reaching your toes can cause the nails to be trimmed in an uneven manner, which can cause them to grow into adjacent skin, causing the skin to swell. When the skin digs into the skin, pain can occur.

For these reasons, it is suggested that you soak your toenails in warm water to soften them before cutting. This can avoid an uneven cutting of the nails. It’s also recommended that you wear sandals so that the toenail can grow out, instead of digging into the skin from your shoes fitting too tightly. Once you obtain shoes that have enough breathing room, those shoes should be padded in the event your toes rub against the inside of the shoes.

When ingrown nails get out of control and cause extreme pain, they may have to be cut via a surgical procedure to ensure that the nail grows back correctly. This is generally very helpful and in some instances, the whole toenail must be removed to allow for the new nail to grow normally, and not in a curved manner. This treatment will control any infection as well, with the addition of applicable antibiotics.

Ingrown toenails have a way of growing out of control if ignored. This is why we suggest that you contact us as soon as possible at the first sign of abnormal nail growth or discomfort. Take this opportunity to get the best treatment offered by Dr. Alexopoulos at My Chicago Foot Expert!
