Don’t Let Your Corns Get Carried Away

Corns that form on feet are generally caused by friction and pressure which results in pain and annoyance. They are most likely to be caused by badly fitting shoes that are too tight. Our foot doctor, Stavros O. Alexopoulos, DPM, can treat your corns with great expertise. Please call us at (773) 561-8100 or visit us at My Chicago Foot Expert located in Chicago to learn more about this condition.

Corns emerge on the surfaces of feet as hardened areas of with a raised bump, typically on the top or side of toes. They generally do not go away on their own and will become thicker and more painful with time. Normal everyday routines leave feet and toes vulnerable to extreme amounts of friction that lead to corns and unsightly foot complications.

Corns are treated by stopping the continuous pressure placed on the feet. They can be prevented by wearing comfortable fitting shoes with large amounts of room in the toe box region and staying clear of loose fitting shoes. Orthotics are also helpful to absorb shock when walking or running. Tight socks or stockings are also good for the feet since they can help the feet fight off friction when standing all day.

Corns can also be removed surgically; yet, they can still come back and it is common for them to recur. If surgery is chosen, they are generally trimmed by shearing dead sheets of skin off the infected location with a sharp scalpel. Another form of treatment is through homeopathy, which has been shown to prevent recurrence. This method is preferred to the other home remedies such as cutting off the corns with a knife, which can cause other complications and injuries. Some great natural remedies for treating corns are Antim Crudum, Sulphur to help with burning, Silicea to treat soft corns and Lycopodium to treat pain caused by pressure from corns.
