Five Things You Can Do to Promote Foot Health at Home

How is your self-isolation going? Maintaining the motivation necessary for self-care can be challenging when you’re home day after day. Be sure to take steps to protect physical mental health until life returns to normal! Eat a healthy diet and drink plenty of water. Get outside when you can. Exercise. Stay connected; visit virtually with friends and family. Engage your mind by reading and watching interesting films and television programs. And don’t forget about your feet! Even when you’re not going anywhere, they will benefit from your attention. Here are five suggestions from Cook County podiatrist Dr. Stavros O. Alexopoulos to keep them in tip-top shape:

  1. Practice good hygiene. Wash your feet daily with antibacterial soap and dry them well, especially between the toes.
  2. Get to know your feet. Be alert to changes in their shape, which can indicate the onset of a potentially painful issue such as bunions or hammertoes. Take note of changes to the appearance or texture of the skin and nails. Redness, discoloration, flaking, scaling, or itchiness might be a sign of Athlete’s foot or other infection.
  3. Take discomfort seriously. Painful feet are not a normal, unavoidable part of aging.
  4. Get moving. Regular physical activity is the best way to keep your feet and ankles in good condition. This simple step will go far in preventing osteoporosis, a dangerous weakening of the bones in the feet and throughout the body, as well as maintaining and improving strength and balance.
  5. Trim toenails regularly and carefully. Use a clipper, rather than scissors, and trim straight across. Never round the corners, as this can cause ingrown toenails and lead to infection.
