Five Tips for Great Back to School Shoes

It’s back to school season and many families are in the market for new children’s shoes, even if students may not be heading back into the classroom. It’s important to replace your kids’ shoes every 3-6 months to accommodate wear and tear and allow for growth. But how do you know which shoes to pick? Here are five tips from Cook county podiatrist Dr. Stavros O. Alexopoulos:

  1. If it is safe where you live, head to a brick-and-mortar store to do your shoe shopping. This will make it possible to have your kids’ feet professionally measured and ensure that you’re purchasing shoes in the proper size.
  2. Shop in the afternoon, when feet can be up to a half size larger than in the morning. If your child uses custom orthotics or gel inserts, be sure to bring them along with you.
  3. Do not purchase shoes for the children to “grow into” or shoes that need to be “broken in.” Shoes should fit properly and comfortably right away in order to keep feet properly supported and prevent blisters.
  4. Shoes with laces or straps will allow for a more customized fit that slip-on styles. Choose a pair with a wide, roomy toe box and non-skid sole for safety.
  5. Check the shoe’s flexibility. Select a pair that is stiff in the middle to support arches but flexible in other places for comfort.
