Foot and Ankle Pain May Be Caused by Arthritis

Are your feet or ankles stiff? Do you notice any redness or swelling in the areas of the joints? Is the pain and stiffness limiting the motion of your feet and even inhibiting walking or exercising?

You may have arthritis in your feet and/or ankles. Rheumatoid arthritis, the more serious form of arthritis, causes chronic inflammation in the joint lining of many smaller joints like those in the ankle and toes.

Osteoarthritis is a more common form and is caused by degeneration of the joints because of wear and tear damage to joint cartilage over time. Joints tend to wear down as we age, especially those that have been overused. Sudden trauma like a broken bone, ankle sprain or torn ligament can also cause osteoarthritis in the future.

Gout is another type of arthritis – you can read more about gout in our blog on this painful inflammation.
