Four Tips to Stay Healthy During the Pandemic and After

Months into the global pandemic, we have all heard the tips about staying safe from COVID-19, the illness caused by the novel coronavirus. We’re cultivating new habits such as social distancing and wearing a mask when out in public. These habits will help reduce our risk of infection from coronavirus but, of course, that’s not the only illness we need to concern ourselves with. Even as we remain at home, it’s important to take steps to protect our overall well-being. Here are four tips from Cook County podiatrist Dr. Stavros O. Alexopoulos to help you:

  1. Continue thoroughly washing your hands frequently throughout the day. Use plenty of soap and warm water. Feet, too! Keeping feet clean and dry (especially between the toes) is the best way to prevent infections such as athlete’s foot.
  2. Pay careful attention to your diet, especially if you’re living with a chronic disease such as hypertension or diabetes. Load up on fruits, vegetables, whole grains, lean protein, and low-fat dairy foods when you go to the store. Keep the junk to a minimum. Save money at the grocery store by skipping sodas and sugary drinks. Stick to plain tap water at home.
  3. Prevent the at-home falls that can cause foot and ankle injuries. Wear rubber-soled slippers or shoes at home. Tack down the edges of area rugs. Use a sturdy stepstool to reach things from high places.
  4. Maintain good mental health. Call friends and family members often. Read a book. Play a game online. Get outside and take a walk. Exercise is good for body, mind, and spirit!
