Getting Familiar with Your Feet

Your feet and ankles are among the most complex formation in the incredible structure that is the human body. They allow us to stand, walk, and run upright, unique among all organisms on the planet. Unfortunately, their delicate assembly also leaves your feet vulnerable. The good news is your podiatrist is a medical specialist, able to diagnose and treat any illness of or injury to your feet, ankles, and lower legs.

You should see a podiatrist like Cook County foot doctor, Dr. Stavros O. Alexopoulos, once a year for preventative care, and any time you experience discomfort or notice a change in your feet. The more you know about your feet, the easier it will be to spot an issue. Here are some facts for you to be aware of:

  1. Your feet and ankles are strong. They contain 52 bones (one quarter of all the bones in your body!), arranged in more than 30 joints and supported by more than 100 muscles, ligaments, and tendons, along with miles of veins, arteries, capillaries, and nerves.
  2. Your feet are like the “canaries in the coal mine” of your body. That is, symptoms of illnesses including cardiovascular disease and diabetes may first manifest in the feet. Be alerted to changes in the appearance and shape of your feet and report them to your podiatrist right away.
  3. Foot pain should always be taken seriously. If you experience discomfort after a fall or other incident, try treating it at home with RICE (rest, ice, compression, elevation). If your pain doesn’t resolve in a day or so, call your foot doctor. But what about chronic foot pain? This is neither normal nor unavoidable. Your podiatrist can determine the source of your problem, and treat it with a wide range of options including custom orthotic shoe inserts to provide cushioning and support.
