Heel Pain is a Symptom of Plantar Fasciitis

Men and women often see a board-certified podiatrist like Cook County foot doctor Dr. Stavros O. Alexopoulos because they are experiencing one form of foot pain or another. Among the most common varieties of discomfort is heel pain. Unfortunately, patients often arrive at the My Chicago Foot Expert office in Ravenswood with severe cases because they have been operating under the misconception foot pain is a normal, unavoidable part of aging and there is nothing to be done about it. Your podiatrist can diagnose the cause of your foot pain and can offer treatment to relieve it.

Several factors can cause heel pain.  One reason for heel pain is plantar fasciitis, an inflammation of the soft tissue that runs the length of the foot from the heel to toes. The most telling symptom of plantar fasciitis is pain concentrated in the heel and is worse first thing in the morning. If you notice this occurring, you should report them to your podiatrist right away.

Plantar fasciitis is common, especially among those who stand for long periods at work, who enjoy stop-and-start sports like basketball or tennis, wear high heel shoes often, or are overweight or obese. You can reduce your risk of plantar fasciitis by taking breaks to sit at work when possible, choosing low-impact athletic activities periodically, and wearing comfortable, sensible shoes every day. Eating a moderate diet rich in lean protein, whole grains, and plenty of produce will reduce your risk of plantar fasciitis and many other health issues.

If your foot doctor determines you have plantar fasciitis, they will have numerous treatment options to help you. Common approaches include over the counter and prescription medication for pain and swelling, physical therapy, and custom orthotics to provide cushioning and support. Surgery is typically required only in severe cases.
