How Much Do You Know About Diabetes?

According to the Centers for Disease Control, 1 in 10 Americans – over 34 million peoplehave diabetes. Further, 88 million American adults – approximately 1 in 3 have prediabetes, meaning they are likely to develop this dangerous disease. Diabetes has undoubtedly been in the news lately. Have you been paying attention? Here are five facts that Cook County podiatrist Dr. Stavros O. Alexopoulos wants you to know:

  1. Diabetes occurs when the pancreas, a gland in the body’s endocrine system, fails to produce enough of the hormone insulin, which is necessary to regulate blood sugar glucose levels. As a result, glucose levels can fluctuate wildly throughout the day.
  2. Symptoms of diabetes include extreme thirst, weight loss, dry skin, fatigue, and blurry vision.
  3. Complications of diabetes can affect the cardiovascular system, the kidneys, the eyes, and the feet.
  4. One common foot-related issue caused by diabetes is neuropathy, or nerve damage, in the feet and often characterized by tingling, numbness, or a sensation like a sock bunched up under the toes. Neuropathy can make it hard for people with diabetes to notice minor nicks or cuts, which become infected after lack of treatment. Deep, ulcerated wounds can result, requiring hospitalization or even amputation.
  5. Men, women, and children with diabetes must see an experienced podiatrist at least once each year. Your foot doctor is a medical specialist with years of training, including a hospital residency, and is the best-qualified doctor to help you with the examination, diagnosis of any existing or potential issues, and an ongoing plan for care.
