Improve Foot Health. Break These Habits Today

With 52 bones, dozens of joints, and hundreds of muscles, nerves, ligaments, tendons, and other soft tissues, your feet and ankles are delicate structures, vulnerable to illness and injury. Like so much about your health, much that relates to the wellness of your feet, ankles, and lower legs are within your control, but, for many people, bad habits can get in the way. Here are three that Cook County podiatrist Dr. Stavros O. Alexopoulos wants you to be aware of and leave behind today:

  1. Wearing high heel shoes every day: Those pointy stilettos may look great, but they’re hurting your feet. Daily use can lead to a host of foot deformities, including bunions and hammertoes. If you must wear them, save them for parties and special occasions. Switch to more comfortable, sensible shoes for every day. Pick a pair with a wide, low heel and roomy toe box. Make sure they have non-skid soles to prevent falls that can cause foot and ankle injuries.
  2. Going barefoot in shared environments: Whether it’s a hotel shower or a pool deck, bacteria, viruses, and fungus abound. Stay safe from plantar warts, Athlete’s foot, and other infections. Pack a pair of slippers or shower shoes. Think of them as masks for your feet!
  3. Skipping your annual visit with your podiatrist: Your foot doctor is a medical specialist with years of education and experience. They are the best-qualified professional to examine, diagnose, and treat this part of your body. You should schedule an appointment any time you are in pain or notice a change to the shape or appearance of your feet. If nothing’s bothering you, be sure to come in at least once a year to ensure continued good health.
