Keep Little Feet Healthy on Halloween

Many communities are moving forward with Halloween celebrations this year. If yours is one of them, you may be considering taking your kids out for one of America’s favorite annual rituals: trick-or-treating. Happily, masks are part of the fun so, as long as you maintain appropriate social distance, you’ll be observing necessary COVID prevention protocols while you’re in costume. But what about the health of your children’s feet and ankles? With kids running around excitedly wearing all sorts of unusual attire, foot and ankle injuries are common on Halloween. Here are some suggestions from Cook County podiatrist Dr. Stavros O. Alexopoulos to keep your family safe:

  1. No costumes below the knee, please! It means gowns, robes, etc., should stop well above the ground to prevent tripping. Similarly, just say no to costume footwear. Avoid high heels, oversized shoes and the like.
  2. Stick to sensible footwear for any outdoor activity, including trick-or-treating. Choose comfortable sneakers with non-skid soles. Insist on socks to prevent blisters. If your child uses custom orthotics, be sure they’ve got them in their shoes. It will keep them feeling great as the night goes on.
  3. Be sure to light everyone’s way with a powerful flashlight. Many ankles sprains and fractures of the delicate bones of the feet are the results of falling.
  4. Encourage children to spread their candy consumption over several days or even weeks. Good dietary habits are essential in reducing the likelihood of developing diabetes – which can seriously impact foot health – in later years.
