Learning the ABCDE’s of Melanoma

When you think about cancer, what do you imagine? Possibly body parts such as the lung, the breast, or the brain. Do you know your feet are also vulnerable? Skin cancer of the foot can be just as serious as anywhere else on the body. July is UV Safety Awareness Month, and Cook County podiatrist Dr. Stavros O. Alexopoulos has some things he’d like you to know.

There is no one appearance of skin cancer, but there are some common characteristics that you can look for. They might appear in a new mole or as changes to an existing mole. These traits are referred to with the initials ABCDE to help make it easy for you to remember.

Like most medical issues, when caught early, melanoma is easier and more effectively treated. Your podiatrist can provide care for your skin cancer, often with expert surgery. If you are worried about skin cancer, or if you have any other concerns about the health and wellness of your feet, ankles, or lower legs, it’s time to see your foot doctor. With years of specialized training and experience, your podiatrist is the most qualified medical professional to care for this part of your body.
