Prevent Falls to Prevent Injury

September is National Falls Prevention Awareness Month. Here at My Chicago Foot Expert’s Ravenswood office, Cook County podiatrist Stavros O. Alexopoulos, DPM, and the rest of the staff are committed not only to serving our patients by diagnosing and treating the foot and ankle injuries that can come as the result of a fall, but to helping you prevent those injuries by avoiding falls. Here are some tips to keep you safe:

  1. Preventing falls begins at home. Keep your house or apartment in good repair. Pick up clutter on the floor that could cause you to trip and fall. Make sure to tack or tape down area rugs at the edges.
  2. While you’re at home, wear a pair of comfortable shoes or slippers. Choose a pair with a rubber sole and a back (no slides, please!) for extra stability. You can keep from tracking dust and dirt into your home by selecting a pair just for at-home use and keeping them near the door.
  3. It’s not unusual for adults and kids of all ages to get hurt by falling while standing or climbing on an unstable surface to get at something out of reach. Use a proper step stool or a ladder and ask a family member or friend to act as “spotter.”
  4. It is difficult to walk on high, pointy heels, and they’re likely to catch in sidewalk cracks. If you opt to wear stilettos, save them for special occasions. Bring them with you in a bag and put them on when the party starts.

If you’ve hurt yourself in a fall, or if you have another concern about the health and wellness of your feet, ankles, or lower legs, your podiatrist can help you. With years of specialized training and experience, your foot doctor is a medical expert and the best-qualified doctor to care for the part of your body.
