Protect Feet and Ankles While You Enjoy Winter Sports

Winter is here, and many families are deciding to engage in some level of participation in outdoor winter sports, even as the pandemic continues. If yours is among them, you’ll want to keep everyone safe and healthy by wearing masks and bringing hand sanitizer along for the day. You’ll also want to take some steps before, during, and after your outing to protect foot and ankle health. Skiing, skating, and other winter activities are great fun, but they pose risks to foot and ankle health. Falls can occur, and foot and ankle injuries can result. Here are some suggestions from Cook County podiatrist Dr. Stavros O. Alexopoulos to keep your whole family healthy.

Before You Go

Check the condition of your winter gear. Make sure laces and bindings are in good shape and everything fits properly. Trim toenails to avoid irritation. Remember to trim straight across and to use a clipper, rather than scissors, to prevent ingrown toenails. Make sure everyone has a warm pair of wool socks. These will keep feet warmer than cotton and will do a better job of wicking away moisture.

While You’re Out

Pack snacks and plenty of water to make sure everyone is well-fed and well-hydrated. Distraction and dehydration can lead to accidents. Create a mini foot first aid kit and put it in your backpack as well. Include antibiotic ointment, bandages, moleskin, tweezers, and over-the-counter pain relievers. Finally, bring a clean, dry pair of socks for everyone. Dampness creates a hospitable environment for fungus.

When You Get Home

Relax and put your feet up in front of the fire! You’ve earned the rest after a full day on the slopes, at the rink, or out on the trail. Also, elevating feet today is the best way to reduce any swelling and ensure comfort tomorrow.
