Stay Safe from Coronavirus This Summer

If you’re like most Chicago residents, you’re beginning to emerge from weeks and months of staying at home, ready to enjoy the nice weather and visit some of the recently-reopened local restaurants and other businesses. You can have a good time this summer, but it’s important to remember that you still need to take active steps to protect yourself from the novel coronavirus and from COVID-19, the disease it causes. Here are some suggestions from board-certified Cook County podiatrist Dr. Stavros O. Alexopoulos:

  1. Some people are at higher risk of a serious case of COVID-19 if they become infected, including those over 65 and those who have underlying conditions such as asthma, COPD, hypertension, or diabetes. If you’re one of them, don’t let your guard down.
  2. Become a vigilant hand washer! You might think you know how to wash your hands, but are you sure? Take a few moments to review the CDC hand washing Invest in some antibacterial soap. Then make hand washing a habit. Wash your hands when you wake up in the morning, before you go to bed at night, every time you come home from the outside, after using the bathroom, and before preparing food. Insist that everyone who lives in your house does the same.
  3. Keep your distance. Remember to maintain a six-foot distance between yourself and others when out in public. Wear a mask, not only to keep yourself safe, but for the health and safety of those around you as well. You can be asymptomatic for up to 14 days after infection with coronavirus. That means that you can carry the virus without showing any signs, and can infect others during that time.

As you begin to return to your regular activities, check your calendar. Are you due (or overdue) for a regular appointment with your foot doctor? Preventative care is the best way to keep feet, ankles, and lower legs healthy and free from illness and injury. Schedule your next visit with Stavros O.
