Take Care of Your Feet While You Remain Safe at Home

Many Chicago residents are staying home, venturing out only for the most essential of errands, such as grocery shopping and visits to the pharmacy. It is a critical component of “flattening the curve,” slowing the spread of COVID-19 and minimizing the number of Americans affected. It can be hard, but your sacrifice helps keep us all healthy.

One of the things that can be challenging about remaining in social isolation is maintaining the wellness of your feet. You’ll need to do everything you can to ensure they stay healthy throughout the crisis. Here are some tips from Cook Country podiatrist Dr. Stavros O. Alexopoulos to help you:

  1. Wear rubber-soled shoes or slippers inside to reduce the possibility of a fall that could result in a foot or ankle injury.
  2. Stay safe from ingrown toenails. Keep toenails neatly trimmed. Don’t use scissors. Instead, use a clipper made just for the job. Trim straight across. Do not round corners.
  3. You don’t want to get plantar warts! Be sure to kill the virus that causes them – and other germs – by daily spraying showers, bathroom floors, and other surfaces with an antibacterial product like Lysol.
  4. Get outside and take a walk. It is the best way to stretch muscles and soft tissues and to keep bones healthy and strong. Weather not cooperating? Tune into a yoga practice or another exercise class online. New options are popping up every day.
  5. We all need to eat carefully now. It is especially important if you have diabetes. Unregulated blood sugar is a contributing factor in numerous foot health issues.
