Three Steps to Good Foot Health this Summer

Are you enjoying the warm weather with an increase in outdoor activities? So many local families are heading outside to enjoy hiking, running, and team sports. Unfortunately, that increase in activity can also include an increase in foot and ankle injury and illness. Cook County podiatrist Stavros O. Alexopoulos, DPM, has some suggestions to reduce your risk:

  1. Create a small “foot first aid kit” and tuck it into your bag when heading out to the trail or field. Include a tweezer to remove splinters and other foreign objects, antibiotic ointment, bandages, and moleskin to help with blisters. Laminate your podiatrist’s phone number and keep it handy.
  2. If your podiatrist has prescribed custom orthotics for cushioning and support, use them every time you exercise. It is the best way to prevent foot pain.
  3. Be sure your athletic shoes are in excellent condition. If it’s been more than a year (or more than 500 road miles) since you invested in new footwear, it’s probably time for a replacement. Foot size changes with age, and not just for kids. Take advantage of the opportunity to head to your favorite brick-and-mortar store and have your feet professionally measured.
  4. If you’ll be barefoot outside, apply a high-UPF sunscreen to your feet and ankles and reapply it after swimming or sweating. It is the best way to prevent skin cancer.
  5. Don’t suffer from heel pain or other muscle discomforts. Be sure to stretch well before and after exercise.
