Treat Your Toes to a Pedicure at Home

We’ve been staying at home for months now, sheltering in place to flatten the curve and keep our community safe from COVID-19. That’s meant giving up some of the little luxuries that we’re accustomed to. For many My Chicago Foot Expert patients, that’s meant doing without spa pedicures. Don’t let lack of access to your favorite salon turn into a health issue for your feet! With just a little bit of know-how, you can treat yourself or a loved one to a pedicure at home. Here are some tips from Cook County podiatrist Dr. Stavros O. Alexopoulos:

  1. Remove any old polish and carefully inspect your toes. Be on the lookout for any unusual appearance of the nails including a change in color or uneven texture. Look at the shape of your toes, taking note of any unusual bumps, which could mean a developing bunion or hammertoe.
  2. Trim toenails carefully, using a clipper made specially for this task. Trim straight across. Don’t round the corners, which can lead to ingrown toenails.
  3. Use a pumice stone to gently rub calluses. Do not use a grater or razor, which can cause small nicks or cuts and lead to infection. This prohibition is especially important if you’re living with diabetes or an autoimmune condition.
  4. Moisturize feet with an emollient cream. Focus on the heels, where skin tends to get dry and can crack.
  5. Apply polish if you like.
  6. When you’re done, put on a pair of socks and some slippers or shoes. Don’t go barefoot, especially after moisturizing. This will reduce the possibility of sustaining a foot or ankle injury by tripping or falling at home.
