What Will You Do to Celebrate Foot Health Awareness Month?

April is Foot Health Awareness Month. Granted it’s not as exciting as Christmas or your birthday, but it’s still an occasion worth celebrating! How? Here are three suggestions from Cook county podiatrist Dr. Stavros O. Alexopoulos:

  1. Take a few moments to look at your feet from all angles. If flexibility or limited range of motion, makes this difficult, ask a family member for help or place a small mirror on the floor to facilitate the process. Has anything about the shape changed? A bony protrusion at the big toe joint might be an incipient bunion; a toe rising up and out of line with the others might mean that a hammertoe is developing. Be alert to anything unusual about the skin on your feet. Itching, redness, flaking or scaling might indicate fungal infection and should all be reported to your foot doctor.
  2. Your feet should not hurt. It’s not just because you’re getting older. Pay attention to foot pain and discuss it with your podiatrist. You could have arthritis, plantar fasciitis, or even an undiagnosed fracture.
  3. When was the last time you saw your foot doctor? Like so many aspects of health care, preventative and proactive care is the best way to protect foot health. Your podiatrist is a medical specialist and the best-qualified doctor to care for the feet, ankles, and lower legs of children, adolescents, adults, and seniors. Everyone in your family should be seen at least once each year. This is especially true for people with diabetes, who are at particular risk of complications that affect the feet.
