Why Don’t My Shoes Fit Anymore?

Are you pulling your favorite summer shoes out of the closet, only to find that they don’t fit anymore? Are you experiencing foot pain as you try to squeeze into your shoes? Were you astounded at a recent shoe store to discover that your feet have grown a half-size?

Relax – for most individuals this is completely normal! Here are some reasons why our feet get bigger even as adults:

Feet That Swell

Our feet swell now and then and usually the reason is simple and not worrying, including:

Your shoes may feel tight because your feet are temporarily swollen. Try resting and elevating your feet above the level of your heart to relieve the swelling. Stavros O. Alexopoulos, DPM urges you to come in for a visit if the swelling persists.

Feet Change Shape As We Age

As we age, our feet often change shape. The fatty pads on the soles of the feet thin out and our tendons and ligaments lose the ability to stretch. So the feet can flatten out and lengthen even though they are not actually growing. Wearing flimsy shoes like flip-flops can contribute to this change. You may also experience foot pain because of the loss of cushioning and support for your feet. Some research shows that individual over age 40 can gain a half shoe size every 10 years! So it’s very important that you have both feet measured each time you shop for shoes. And if any of your shoes causes pain or feels tight, get rid of them and replace them with sturdy shoes that fit well. Wearing shoes that are too small can lead to foot problems such as hammertoes, bunions, plantar fasciitis or heel pain, flat feet and chronic foot pain.

Pregnancy and Other Weight Gain

If you have gained weight due to a pregnancy or other reason, your arches may be forced lower because of the increase in your body weight. When the arch is lowered, it adds more to the length and width of your foot. During pregnancy a woman’s foot may grow by one-half size or even more. Invest in some comfortable, supportive shoes like athletic shoes in the larger size to keep your feet comfortable during your pregnancy.
