Winter Foot and Ankle Safety: Five Tips

We take winter seriously in Chicago. You’re probably ready for the cold months with snow tires on your car, warm sweaters in your closet, and plenty of soup in your freezer and pantry. But what about your feet and ankles? Have you taken steps to ensure they remain safe and well through the season? Here are five suggestions that Cook County podiatrist Dr. Stavros O. Alexopoulos would like you to keep in mind:

  1. Check your boots. Please make sure they are in good condition and they fit well. Boots should be well-insulated and offer thick lug soles to assist with traction on snow and ice.
  2. Be attentive to your environment. Watch for spots of black ice on sidewalks and in parking lots. Slipping and falling can lead to foot and ankle injuries.
  3. Keep feet warm. Wear slippers at home, wool socks, and insulated shoes or boots when you go out. It is critical if you have diabetes or a circulatory issue like Raynaud’s disease or if your ability to experience sensation is impaired by neuropathy or another problem.
  4. Moisturize your feet well to prevent dry skin and painful heel cracks. The best time to do this is right after a shower or bath. Be sure to put a pair of slippers on those slippery feet!
  5. Do you enjoy winter sports, like skiing or skating? Be sure to invest in the appropriate gear, including requirements for safety. It may cost a bit more today but will be worth the price in the long run.

Regardless of the season, the very best thing you can do for the health of your feet, ankles, or lower legs is to see your foot doctor regularly. A board-certified podiatrist like Stavros O. Alexopoulos, DPM is a medical specialist with years of education and experience and is the best-qualified doctor to care for this part of your body.
