How do I pick out the best shoes for my feet?

The best way to pick out shoes is to shop at a reputable shoe store with trained sales associates who can accurately answer your questions and properly assess your feet. Tell them what type of job you have or what activity you’ll be doing when wearing the shoes so they can recommend the appropriate style. Choose shoes that are made of a natural material as opposed to plastic and rubber. Have the associate measure your feet to make sure you have a proper fit. We also recommend that you go shopping in the late afternoon, as feet tend to swell throughout the day. All of these tips will help make sure that you get a comfortably fitting shoe that will keep your feet safe and healthy. What can I do to relieve heel pain or plantar fasciitis?

Plantar fasciitis is a very common problem that we see in our office. It is one of the causes of heel pain, which unfortunately may lead to the formation of a bone spur. All of these things combined may make it very uncomfortable to walk, stand, get out of bed in the morning or even get out of the car. It often hurts a great deal when standing, after sitting or lying down for awhile. To help relieve your pain, we recommend wearing well-made, supportive shows with cushioned insoles. It’s also best to always wear shoes while you are at home, as sandals or slippers do not offer adequate support. Sometimes soaking your feet in warm water or applying ice to the area may help to decrease the inflammation. Different forms of stretching for the leg muscles and massaging the foot and calf muscles would also help decrease some of the discomfort you may be feeling. What is heel pain and how can I prevent it?

Heel pain has many causes and it occurs in children, adults and senior citizens. The causes range from the effects of obesity, to a pinched nerve, or to an injury to the tendon or muscle. It can also be caused by a crack in the bone or something worse, such as a bone tumor. To prevent heel pain, for some of the more common causes, it is important to wear good, supportive shoes. Preferably wear shoes with laces that help secure the foot and have good insoles that are cushioned and orthopedic in nature. It helps to avoid walking barefooted, since that increases the pressure on the heel and you also have less protection under the heel, which can lead to other problems. Weight loss also helps to decrease the force that is put on your heel. If you have been experiencing heel pain for a long time, you should see Dr. Alexopoulos to have your foot evaluated.
