Find Help for Foot Pain at Your Podiatrist’s Office

Are you walking around under the mistaken notion that foot pain is a normal, natural, and unavoidable part of growing older? In fact, nothing could be further than the truth! It is entirely possible to live a long, full, active life free from foot pain. A board-certified podiatrist like Cook County foot doctor Stavros O. Alexopoulos, DPM, can help.

One common reason for foot pain is developing of a deformity such as a bunion or a hammertoe. Knowing how to spot these changes is an important step in getting help.

A bunion forms when the bones of the foot shift out of place. It occurs most commonly at the point where the big toe joins the rest of the foot. Be alert to a hard, bony protrusion on the inner edge of the foot. Redness, swelling, and difficulty wearing shoes, standing, walking, or running comfortably can also occur. A bunion can also develop on other, smaller toes. It is known as a bunionette or a tailor’s bunion.

Hammertoes are more common on the smaller toes and formed when the tendons and ligaments connect the bones of the toes to the muscles shorten and contract. A hammertoe can be flexible or rigid. The most common symptom is a toe that rises up and out of line with the others, but you should also take note if the toe curls and won’t straighten or straightens and won’t bend. Like a bunion, it can cause pain and difficulty going through your daily activities.

Your podiatrist can examine your feet, determine the cause of your discomfort, and, if the issue is a bunion or hammertoe, provide relief through a variety of non-invasive treatment options including over-the-counter and prescription medications for pain and swelling, custom orthotics for cushioning and support, physical therapy, and specialized footwear. Invasive treatments, such as surgery, are usually only needed in severe cases.
