Keep Feet Safe and Healthy on Your Next Airplane Trip

Are you planning a vacation this winter? Will you be traveling by airplane? It’s going to be hard to enjoy yourself if foot or ankle illness, or injury strikes! Here are four tips from Dr. Stavros O. Alexopoulos to keep your feet safe and healthy before, during, and after your flight:

  1. Travel in comfortable shoes. You might be standing on line at security for a while or walking quite a way to get to your gate. This is not the time for those high heels. Choose sensible footwear. If you’re bringing new shoes on your trip, break them in ahead of time. You definitely don’t want a blister to form. Toss a mini first aid kit with a few bandages and some antibacterial ointment in your bag in case a problem occurs.
  2. Don’t skip the socks. Thousands of people go through that security checkpoint every day. Plenty of them don’t wear socks and their bare feet touch the floor. Don’t you go barefoot, too. Your socks will protect your from germs that can lead to plantar warts and other infections when you take of your socks for screening.
  3. If your flight is more than an hour or two, get up and move around periodically. Take a walk up and down the length of the airplane aisle. This is the best way to prevent dangerous blood clots called deep vein thrombosis (DVT) in the legs. The risk of DVT is higher in tobacco users. If you still smoke, please consider quitting. Your doctor can help.
  4. Drink plenty of water during your trip. This will reduce the likelihood of edema (swelling) in your feet, ankles, and calves during your flight.
